Post-Doctoral Research Associate in High Performance Computing

The UMBC High Performance Computing Facility (HPCF, www.umbc.edu/hpcf) at the University
of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is searching for a
post-doctoral research associate in scientific or
statistical computing with a research specialization in parallel
computing. Fluency in programming languages and MPI in a Linux
environment as well as demonstrated excellent communication and
interpersonal skills are essential for this position.
UMBC is a medium-sized public research university with 12,000
students including 3,000 graduate students and strong research emphases
in science, engineering, information technology, and the mathematical
sciences. It is located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor with a
concentration of high-tech and bio-tech industry, government agencies
and research labs. UMBC was just recognized as Number 1 up-and-coming
national university and Number 1 public national university for
undergraduate teaching by U.S. News and World Report; see www.umbc.edu. A state-of-the-art 86-node
distributed-memory cluster with two quad-core Intel Nehalem processors
per node, a quad-data rate InfiniBand interconnect, and 160 TB storage
solution is being set up in the facility in Fall 2009. HPCF is a
community-based, interdisciplinary core facility used by research groups
from all areas of the campus.
The purpose of this position is to provide user support and to help
widen the user base of the cluster by offering collaborative research
assistance to application researchers. The candidate is expected to
continue his/her own research agenda in parallel computing, but will
also participate in a wide range of application areas by collaborating
with the research groups using the HPCF cluster. Additionally, there are
excellent opportunities for developing a strong resume for future
faculty positions through experience also with education on parallel
computing at all levels, for instance by getting involved with an
NSF-funded REU Site on scientific, parallel, and statistical computing
(www.umbc.edu/hpcreu) and by
participating in the unique Center for Interdisciplinary Research and
Consulting (CIRC, www.umbc.edu/circ) offering
mathematical and statistical consulting to the community from within the
Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Because of these special
opportunities at UMBC currently, this position is also attractive as a
second post-doc, particularly for researchers who would like to improve
their credentials in interdisciplinary research and in teaching and
student guidance of undergraduates as well as graduates.
